Almshouse Residents in Colchester

Our Mission

The purpose of the Lady D’Arcy Almshouse Charity is to provide secure, well-maintained homes for people in need, while supporting independent living within a respectful and settled community.

In doing so, we also take seriously our responsibility to care for the historic buildings entrusted to us, ensuring they remain part of Colchester’s townscape for years to come.

Alongside this, we aim to support residents’ wellbeing, reduce social isolation where possible, and contribute quietly to a better quality of life.

Our history

The Lady D’Arcy almshouses form part of Colchester’s social and architectural history, with origins in the late nineteenth century.

Early almshouses associated with the charity were constructed in Eld Lane, including two blocks of single-storey dwellings built in 1897 and 1905, designed by the architect C.E. Butcher. These modest and carefully planned homes were intended to provide accommodation for local people in need, reflecting the charitable traditions of the time.

Over the years, the charity has evolved, with additional properties and sites coming into its care. While the buildings and circumstances have changed, the underlying purpose has remained consistent: to provide stable, affordable homes for those who would benefit from them.

Today, the charity continues this work across several locations in Colchester, maintaining its properties and adapting to modern needs while remaining rooted in its original aims.
