Our Homes

We manage a number of almshouses across Colchester, including buildings of historic interest dating from the late nineteenth century, alongside more recent additions.

While each site has its own character, all share the same purpose: to provide comfortable, manageable homes where residents can live independently, within a settled and considerate environment.

We support our residents in Colchester

Our properties are typically arranged as small groups of one-bedroom homes. This allows residents to enjoy privacy and independence, while also benefiting from a natural sense of community.

Many of the buildings retain their original architectural features, with modern amenities introduced carefully and sympathetically, so that homes remain practical without losing their character.

Maintained with care

We take a considered and responsible approach to the upkeep of our properties. Regular maintenance and ongoing investment ensure that homes remain safe, warm, and well presented.

Attention is given not only to the buildings themselves, but also to the surrounding spaces, which contribute to the overall sense of calm and order.

Residents in Colchester

Community and everyday life

Life in an almshouse is not structured or supervised. Residents live independently, but as part of a small and respectful community.

There is often a natural rhythm to daily life, with neighbours offering a friendly word or quiet support where needed. This sense of community develops over time and is valued by many of our residents.

Practical support for residents

Supporting wellbeing

In addition to providing housing, the charity supports initiatives that help residents remain connected and engaged.

This may include informal social opportunities, befriending support, and assistance with digital access, helping residents stay in touch with family, services, and the wider world.

The intention is not to impose activity, but to ensure that support is available where it is welcomed.
